PioneeR

PIONEER is a storage facility that uses more than 700 second-life batteries supplied by leading international manufacturers of electric vehicles to develop a 10 MWh storage system integrated with Fiumicino’s photovoltaic systems.

The project was coordinated by Aeroporti di Roma in partnership with Enel X and Fraunhofer ISE, and was made possible thanks to the European Commission’s Innovation Fund. Loccioni was chosen as system integrator to bring to the project its expertise in connecting the energy and electric mobility sectors.

The design facilitates the telling and understanding of a complex system in continuous transformation. Each container is a storage module characterised by a positive and negative pole. Colour gradients tell the different state of charge of the second-life batteries.
